Report U7s vs Highworth Town B 22-Apr-2007

Having played both the “A” and the “C” sides it was Highworth Town “B’s” who were the visitors to “The Triangle” on a lovely Sunday morning. Highworth had 11 players available so a 7 a side format was played with all 9 Wickham players available this weekend. In a positional switch Harvey moved to the back this weekend with Chloe.

Highworth went on the attack straight from the start and then never left the Wickham half for the first 2 minutes. However despite this pressure Ellis, Chloe, Harvey and Devin were able to deal with everything. Wickham slowly got themselves back into the game and after a little while enjoyed their own period of pressure but again they could not get their shots in on target. A shot from Matthew did rattle the cross bar but it was easily cleared. After 9 minutes following some Highworth pressure Charlie released Devin down the left. He drew the defender and then played
Mathew in who scored at the second attempt. A minute later Matthew broke towards the goal and just like last week was brought down on the edge of the area. Again just like last week the free kick was put away into the far top corner of the goal for 2-0. After 13 minutes Highworth were to get their first goal of the day from a corner which was played out to the edge of the box to an unmarked player to drill the ball past Ellis. Alex came on to replace Charlie with Wickham dominating the rest of the half. However, the lads could not convert the any of the numerous chances which they created with shots from Devin, Tom, Harvey and Matthew all being well saved blocked or just going wide.

Wickham started the second half as they had finished the first with Harvey push up much more but
always racing back to help out in defence. It was from one of his runs in the 3
rd minute that Wickham won a corner. Matthew drove the ball into the area and Devin volley it into the roof of the net. With 7 minutes gone Highworth pilled on the pressure. Three corners were well defended but then from the 4th Devin took control of the ball and laid it up field to Matthew who outpaced the two defenders to score. However, corners were to be Wickham’s undoing as one in the 11th minute somehow got past both Harvey and Devin at the front post and went straight into the goal for 4-2. The 3 goal advantage was restored a minute later as Devin took a throw in, which Eric flicked on to Matthew for him to drill into the back of the net from some distance. The last 3 minutes turned into a very nervy affair. A throw in near the corner was flicked on and somehow ended up in the back of the net. Highworth attacked for all they were worth and with 2 minutes left Devin seemed to have cleared the danger but his clearance hit Chloe and the forward had an easy tap in. Harvey was then injured having put the ball out for a throw with 20 seconds left. When the game restarted Highworth were clear in on goal but Ellis managed to make the save. Following his clearance the whistle went and Wickham had just squeezed home in the end 5-4 from what looked like a comfortable win with less than 5 minutes left.

The Player of the Day was given to Harvey, who despite his attacking tendency’s always managed to get back to help Chloe with the defensive duties.

Report U7s vs Blunsdon Colts 15-Apr-2007

Wickham Wanderers 5 - 2 Blunsdon Colts

After the Easter break Blunsdon Colts were the visitors to “The Triangle” on a hot morning. Blunsdon had 11 players available so a 7 a side format was played. Alex was back today but started as sub, but Eric was missing.

Wickham started off playing Chloe and Tom at the back to hopefully allow Devin to push forwards more. Blunsdon kicked off with their golden shirts were dazzling in the sun light. This can be the only reason I can give for the visitor’s forward (Jack Newton) racing between Chloe and Tom in the first minute to drive the ball into the back of the net without either of them getting a challenge in. Eventually, the two of them worked out how to play together at the back with Tom getting forward as much as he could but then racing back to cover when the ball was lost. This did give Devin the freedom to go forwards and set up a number of opportunities. A minute after Blunsdon had opened the scoring, shots came in from Charlie, Harvey, Devin and Matthew but all that resulted was a corner; from which Devin’s shot went just wide. It was constant Wickham pressure but they could not put the ball into the back of the net. In the 7thminute Ellis made a great save and immediately sent Harvey away down the left. He tucked the ball inside to Devin who then laid it off to Matthew to drill into the net for 1-1. Wickham still attacked, creating chances which some how were stopped but Ellis, Chloe and Tom always seemed to be just in the right place to halt the counter attacks until the 17th minute. Ellis having made some brave saves found himself drawn out of his area where he handled the ball. He saved the free kick well and immediately kicked the ball out to Matthew, who laid it back to Harvey. Harvey found Devin who then played it into Matthew’s path, who duly hit a screamer into the back of the net. Alex came on for Charlie who had done some good work down the right hand side just before the half time whistle went.

The second half kicked off with Charlie still off but Wickham almost scored from the centre as Harvey’s shot flashed across the goal. Blunsdon had changed their keeper who was getting his kicks away much better and putting Chloe and Tom under a lot of pressure. In the 4th minute one such long kick went all the way to Ellis. He responded by kicking it back up the field where Matthew controlled it before sending out to Alex and then onto Devin who was away down the right. He managed to cut into the box and hit his cross shot under the keeper for 3-1. Three minutes later there was almost a repeat as Devin this time crossed the ball in for Matthew to volley the ball into the back of the net, with Harvey just behind him in case he missed it. Despite the score line Blunsdon kept on attacking and with Devin sensing the danger he moved to play a little deeper. After 11 minutes Wickham had a rare attack which saw 3 shots come in before the keeper gathered the ball safely. His long kick caught out the Wickham defence. Ellis made a great initial save but the ball came out to Rhys Jones who slammed the ball in. Blunsdon continued the assault on the Wickham goal but Ellis remained calm(ish) in goal making the saves when necessary. Charlie came back on replacing Alex and was helping out with defensive duties when necessary. With 17 minutes gone Matthew seemed to have been brought down in the box but a free kick was awarded on the edge. Despite a two man wall Matthew hit the ball into the top corner for 5-2. There was still time for Blunsdon to have a free kick themselves on the edge of the box but again Ellis was able to make the save. Four minutes of injury time was played but there were no more goals as Wickham ran out the winners from this very entertaining and well balanced game.

The Player of the Day was awarded by the refereeing team and it went to Devin for being an inspiration in midfield.

Report: U7’s vs Wantage Concorde 1-Apr-2007

Wickham Wanderers 9-0 Wantage Concorde

It was off to Wantage this weekend. Having turned up for a 12.30 kick off and put up the goals with the grounds man for the home team, Wantage eventually tuned up expecting a 13.00 kick off. A 7-a-side game of four, 10 minute quarters was the format this week. Alex called off ill in the morning so Charlie joined Mathew up front with Eric starting as sub.

The first quarter saw Wickham encamped in the Wantage half for most of the quarter. After two minutes Devin sent Matthew away but the defender forced him wide and his shot just went past the post. However from the resulting goal kick Matthew won the ball back and drilled the ball into the back of the net. Some other chances came and went but right on time Tom sent Matthew away and from the edge of the area smashed the ball against the bar and over the line.

Eric came on for the next section of the game in place of Charlie and it was Eric who sent Matthew through in the first minute but the keeper made a great save. Two minutes later Matthew was though hit his shot across the keeper but it came out off the post and Harvey was just beaten to the rebound. A lovely cross field play from Tom to Devin and then to Harvey saw the latter just drag his shot wide. This was the story of the half as Wickham created chance after chance but could not put the ball away. Matthew seemed to be brought down in the box but got his shot away just past the post and then Harvey put one into the side netting.

The second half kicked off with Charlie back on for Eric. Wantage were able to attack a little more now but after 2 minutes a quick throw-in from Devin sent Harvey away down the left. He got an early cross in for Matthew to fire the ball into the back of the net. The play then switched to the right hand side. This time two quick throw-ins from Tom to Devin saw the ball fired across the goal to Harvey at the back edge of the area. He controlled the ball then slotted it inside the near post for 4-0. Chloe was doing everything necessary at the back with Devin being the main midfielder getting back to help. With eight minutes gone, a goal kick was intercepted by Tom who duly placed the ball into the back of the net from some distance out.

Eric came on for the final quarter for Harvey with Charlie moving out to the left hand side. Straight from the kick off Wickham were on the attack with the ball coming to Tom at the back post but some how the ball went between his legs and off. However Eric picked up the goal kick and threaded Matthew through who hit the ball from distance to score. Lots of Wickham pressure followed and eventually Tom crossed the ball to Devin, he past it onto Eric who again slipped Matthew through for an easy tap in. Devin was again doing a good chasing back job (we really must get the other midfielders doing this as well) to help out Chloe but Ellis had very little to do in goal except to pick but the long ball. With seven minutes gone Devin drilled a corner into the box which went past four Wantage defenders for Matthew to again tap in. A hand ball near the edge of the area saw the Wantage keeper make a fantastic save high in the top right hand corner but there was still time for Matthew to add another goal making the final score 9-0.

The Player of the Day could have gone to lots of players. However, for showing a big improvement in his game from prior weeks, getting stuck into the tackles during the second half and for laying two goals on for Matthew it went to Eric.

Report: U7’s vs Highworth “A” 25-Mar-07

Wickham Wanderers 4-5 Highworth A

Highworth A came over to “The Triangle” with 6 players and were happy to play a 6-a-side, 20 minutes each way game, which gave Wickham two subs. Highworth had come with the reputation of being the strongest side in the North Wilts League so this was to be a big test for the lads.

Right from the start you could see that Highworth were a strong team without a weak link in their side. They went on the attack straight away pinning Wickham back in their own half. It was a good two minutes before Wickham could get out of their own half and a throw in was won near the corner flag. Matthew took this and played it to Devin who laid it off to Harvey and then back to Matthew who was on a run into the box. Despite being pushed towards the by-line he got his shot away which creped inside the near post for 1-0. This seemed to pick Wickham up and the game became more even, however the Highworth keeper had a good kick and this was to be Wickham’s down fall. With 11 minutes gone a long goal kick was allowed to bounce over the midfield and the attacker ran onto the ball so score. Highworth scored a great goal at the end of the half as a throw in was hit on the turn and volley into the roof of the net.

Ian tried to get the lads back up again, with Charlie replacing Chloe at the back, asking them to chase harder and pass the ball around more. Wickham were unlucky not to score straight from the kick off as Harvey had his shot well saved for a corner. However, the corner was hit to Tom at the back post who in turn knocked the ball back into Devin to smash into the roof of the net for 2-2. Again, the game remained even but with 10 minutes gone Harvey made a clumsy tackle in the box brining the Highworth player down and the penalty was conversed with ease. Chloe now came back on for Charlie but with 5 minute left a Wickham corner was quickly cleared and suddenly there were 4 attackers against Chloe. The ball was moved around nicely and as Ellis came out it was chipped over him for 2-4. Wickham did not give up and with a minute left Tom went down the right cut into the box and hit a cross shot into the back of the net. With a minute left Wickham had another corner so had pushed everyone up to get the equaliser, however Highworth broke and despite Devin getting one tackle in, there were three forwards available and they were able to score. Almost directly from the centre Matthew went on a solo run and was able to score. Despite winning the ball back immediately from the centre Wickham could only just get out of the centre circle before the full time whistle went for a 4-5 defeat.

The Player of the Day was in no doubt. All the Highworth parents liked the way he played. He was aggressive, but fair in the tackle, his passing was good and he scored a cracking goal so the award went to Devin.

Report: U7’s vs Greenmeadow 18-Mar-2007

Wickham Wanderers 12-2 Greenmeadow

Greenmeadow came over to “The Triangle” with 7 players which matched the number Wickham had available, so a 6-a-Side game was played. With Chloe back in defence it was Charlie who started this weekend as the sub.

The training routine for Tom playing wide right and Harvey wide left worked very well in the first half as everyone seemed to have more space to play in. With three minutes gone Tom was sent away down the right and he wasted no time in cutting into the area and putting his shot into the back of the net. Wickham continued to attack but their shots were going just wide until in the 6th minute Matthew intercepted a goal kick and then blasted it into the net from the edge of the box. In the next minute Harvey took a quick throw in to Matthew who raced into the area to score again. Greenmeadow then put Wickham under some pressure winning their first corner. This took an age to clear but Chloe then found Devin who set Matthew free for him to race clear and score again. Every time Wickham attacked now they seemed to score. Harvey went down the left cut inside and passed the ball to Matthew for an easy tap in. In the 11th minute Devin won the ball just in his own half then, using Matthew as a decoy, went all the way through to score himself. In the very next attack he turned provider sending Harvey through to open his account for the day. Still the goals kept on coming. Charlie had replaced Tom on the right and he now played a lovely ball through to Matthew for him to score again. After 14 minutes Charlie and Devin combined to send Harvey away on the left and he drilled his shot in. There was still time left for Devin to go on a solo run to score making the half time score 10-0.

Greenmeadow changed their keeper at half time and also changed the way they were playing in the second half. There was much more commitment from them in this second period, almost is if it was a different set of players. With 4 minute gone Devin seemed to have everything under control at the back but due to the constant harrying of the Greenmeadow players he lost possession and the forward went through to beat Ellis for 10-1.Still the visitors pushed forwards in search of more goals but with 10 minutes gone Harvey won the ball, went down the line and crossed it in for Matthew to complete his double hat-trick. Three minutes later Matthew was sent through again and as the keeper came out he just got his foot to the ball first to gently roll the ball into the back of the net with Tom following it in. Almost directly from the centre Greenmeadow attacked and scored a great goal, struck from well outside the box giving Ellis no chance. This was a great second half performance from the visitors but it did mean that Wickham ended up 12-2 winners.

Having been asked to stay out on the left and look to pass the ball around plus for scoring two goals on the day The Player of the Day Trophy went to Harvey.

Report: U7’s vs Croft 11-Mar-2007

Wickham Wanderers 3 - 0 Croft

Croft came over to the Triangle with a big squad of 13 players. With Chloe missing for Wickham, eight players were available so a 7 a side format was agreed with Croft holding a number of players back for the second half of the game. Tom again took Chloe’s place at the back with Matthew playing the loan attacker.

Alex was the unlucky player to start on the bench but the rest of the side seemed “up” for the game. Croft kicked off but Matthew immediately won the ball to set up an attack. The majority of the play was initially in the Croft half so Tom pushed up leaving Charlie on his own at the back. After 5 minute a croft defender seemed to pick the ball up on the edge of the box but no free kick was given. Finally, after 7 minutes, a goal mouth scramble saw the ball come out to Harvey, he knocked the ball inside to Tom who drilled the ball into the net. Alex then replaced Eric but Wickham continued to dominate the game. The Croft keeper was having a great game making a number of saves at Matthew’s feet and thanks to his efforts the half time score was 1-0 to Wickham.

The second half was much more even with Ellis called upon to make a number of saves. Wickham were now so keen to get the ball that they were often getting in each others way. With 7 minutes gone Croft had an attacking throw in but this was won by Tom who past it to Devin down the wing. He seemed to have taken on too many players but was able to get his cross into the box where both Harvey and Matthew were unmarked giving Harvey the easy chance to score. Croft never gave up but with 10 minutes gone a quick throw from Matthew found Eric who then past to Harvey. He sent the bal into the middle where Devin looked to shot with his left foot but played it onto his right to then score. 3-0 was the final score but more work needs to be done with getting the lads to spread out and pass the ball.

The Player of the Day Trophy went to Ellis who had shown a big improvement in his goal kicks, he can now can turn defence into attack, and also for keeping his first clean sheet of the season with some good saves.

Report: U7’s vs Manydown 4-Mar-2007

Wickham Wanderers 2-0 Manydown

Manydown returned to the triangle for a second game but were unfortunately let down by one of their players so a six a side game was agreed. With the rain lashing down it was fortunate that a second mini soccer pitch had been prepared on the Saturday since the normal one was virtually unplayable with lots of puddles starting to form.

Harvey had not arrived so Eric started the game helping Chloe in defence but it was
Manydown who started the stronger side. Their little player in the middle of the field was dominating the game and Matthew was often on his own up front. With 6 minutes gone Eric wanted to come off so Alex came on to replace him. None of the Wickham players seemed to be able to kick the ball and thanks to two good blocks by Charlie in goal the score remained level. With 11 minutes gone Alex was now feeling the cold so was replaced by Ellis. Somehow as cross from the right flashed across the Wickham goal but the ball was cleared by Devin who went on a run all the way past the Manydown defence to tuck the ball past the keeper for a half time lead of 1-0.

Ellis now replaced Charlie in goal with Charlie going into the defensive role. Matthew was now too cold to play on so Harvey came on to play up front. With the wind on their backs Manydown dominated the second half but somehow their always seemed to be a Wickham defender just able to make a block at the right time. Ellis made a couple of good stops but struggled against the wind to get the ball clear. With 10 minutes gone one of the Manydown players his a rasping shot from well outside the box, and as the Manydown parents went up shouting goal the ball just went past the angle of the bat and post. Shortly afterwards Tom raced though on goal, but as the keeper came out, he hit his shot wide. With 2 minutes remaining another Manydown cross from the right flashed across the goal and Ellis went out of his area and picked it up thinking the ball had gone out. However, a free kick was correctly awarded but Devin intercepted the cross and drove out of defence. He sent Tom through who outpaced the defender and this time he tucked the ball away, giving Wickham a very fortunate 2-0 victory.
For scoring a great solo goal in the first half and then sending Tom through for the second plus helping the defence out, Devin was awarded the Player of the Day Trophy.

Report: U7’s vs Cold Ash

Wickham Wanderers 5 - 3 Cold Ash

Game four for the under sevens was at home to Cold Ash. Each team had 8 players as this week it was 6-a-side, 15 minutes each way.

Wickham kicked off and were immediately on the attack. The game was all being played in the Cold Ash half with Ellis only touching the ball once in the first 5 minutes and Charlie having very little to do. With 7 minutes gone the ball held up near the left corner flag which Devin then won. He crossed the ball into the middle and Matthew duly tucked the chance away. Cold Ash now attacked but Wickham held firm until in the 10th minute when Charlie knocked the ball out to Harvey who passed the ball into Matthew down the left wing. He cut inside and scored from a very tight angle. Right on time Alex won the ball in defence and got it to Devin who drew the defender before setting up Matthew to complete his hat-trick giving a half time score or 3-0.

Charlie took over in goal from Ellis with Tom moving deeper into defence. Harvey won the ball straight from the Cold Ash centre and gave the ball to Devin who despite being pushed right was able to drill the ball in for 4-0. With 9 minutes gone, following some Cold Ash pressure Devin picked the ball up jus outside the Wickham box and raced through. Using Ellis as a dummy runner he was able to score making it 5-0. With 13 minutes on the clock Wickham were undone by a quick Cold Ash throw in with the forward racing clear to score inside Charlie’s near post. With 17 minutes on the clock a Cold Ash breakaway saw the ball drilled into the back of the net giving Charlie no chance for 5-2. There was still time for a long goal kick from the Cold Ash keeper to go over everyone and for the forward to race clear and score again. Just like last week there was just enough time for the centre to be taken before the final whistle went (19 minutes 13 sec’s ref) giving Wickham a well earned but nervy at the end 5-3 victory.

For playing much of the game out of poison in defence Tom was awarded the Player of the Day Trophy.

Report: U7’s vs Penhill Knights 18-Feb-2007

Wickham Wanderers 6-2 Penhill Knights

Game three for the under sevens was away at Penhill with the squad now up to 10 players. Fortunately Penhill had eight for the game so a 7-a-side, 15 minutes each way format was agreed upon.

Wickham kicked off but lost the ball and were immediately put under pressure but Charlie cleared the danger. The first two minutes were played out in midfield and was a little scrappy but then Devin brook down the right and cut into the box. The chance seemed to have been snuffed out but he laid the ball across the goal for Matthew to score. In the 4th minute a good goal kick from Ellis saw Harvey send Devin away. This time be boor down on the goal and made no mistake with his shot to make it 2-0. In the 7th minute Chloe made a great tackle, taking the ball off their dangerous no2 passing the ball to Charlie. He in turn sent Devin away down the wing. He glanced up, saw Matthew in space and found him with a lovely pass. Matthew then duly completed the task by driving the ball into the back of the net giving Wickham a half time lead of 3-0.

Straight from the centre Penhill attacked down the left hand side. As all the Wickham defence came across the ball was knocked to the back post for an easy tap in. In the 4th minute a goal kick from Ellis was helped forward by Erik and Alex before Oscar sent Devin away. He got past the last defender but as the keeper came out he slipped the ball to Matthew who tapped it into an empty net. In the 7th minute Chloe made another interception and played the ball to Tom, who had just come on for Eric. He sent Matthew racing away down the right and as he reached the box he crossed the ball in for Devin to score. With 5 minutes left Devin found himself helping the defence out and lofted the ball into the Penhill half. Harvey and Matthew both chased after it. Matthew got there first but was forced wide, however somehow he was able to get his shot away and score from the tight angle. With time running out Wickham gave away a throw in by the edge of the area. This was taken quickly and before Wickham knew anything about it the ball was in the back of the net. There was just enough time for the centre to be taken but Wickham had achieved a well earned 6-2 victory.

For some outstanding forward work and scoring 4 goals on the day Mathew was awarded the Player of the Day Trophy.

Report: U7’s vs Manydown 11-Feb-2007

Wickham Wanderers 9 - 4 Manydown

It was all change with the U7’s for their second match against Manydown. Devon Bowers and Matthew Newbrook had joined the squad, so despite Tom and Alex being away Wickham still had 7 players. Manydown only turned up with 5 so it was decided to play 4 quarters of 10 minutes each way instead of the planned 1 of 15 minutes to give their players more recovery time, but Ian told the players it was two different games. The U11 players took charge of the game with William Herrington as ref and Karl Admans and Jesse Bowers as linemen (well done boys).

The initial stages were played in the Manydown half but after two minutes they raced clear and were able to slot the ball just inside Ellis’ near post. However a minute later an individual run from Devon saw him equalise. With eight minutes gone so lovely interplay between Devon and Matthew saw the latter put Wickham into the lead but a minute later Manydown scored again to make the half time score 2-2. From the restart Devon knocked the ball to Matthew who went down the line. He crossed the ball back to Devon whose shot was blocked by Harvey was there to drill a left footed shot into the back of the net. Charlie had come on to play at the back and did well in the second half but midway though Eric was hit in the face by a goal clearance and had to come off to be replaced by Chloe. With these two at the back Manydown did not get another chance and Wickham won 3-2.

The second game was very even at the start but in the 4th minute a great interception by Chloe who passed it to Devon. Devon hit a cross field ball setting Matthew free who drove it in for 1-0. After 7 minutes 3 Manydown players boar down on Chloe. The ball went right and the shot struck the inside of the near post and then the far post before going in, thus 1-1 at half time. In the first minute of the second half from Manydown’s second corner both Harvey and Devon failed to clear the ball and somehow it went in at the near post. In all three games now Wickham have fallen behind but they continued to battle. With 3 minutes gone Chloe again stopped a Manydown attack and found Devon with a lovely pass. He passed the ball to Matthew who went round the defender and then the keeper for a simple tap in. The next minute Matthew won the ball in midfield and headed straight for goal drew the keeper and scored. Straight from the centre Devon won the ball, went straight to the goal and scored. Some good defensive work saw Chloe pass to Charlie who then knocked the ball to Devon. Without even looking he found Matthew who knocked the ball in for 5-2. With a couple in minutes left Ellis came back on for Charlie and found Devon on the left. He crossed the ball to Matthew who drilled the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the area for a 6-2 victory.

Devon with 3 goals and Mathew with 5 goals both had good claims for Player of the Day but for great defensive work, when she was often the last player, the award went to Chloe.
