Report: U7’s vs Highworth Town
30-Jan-2007 by admin.
Sunday 28th January Wickham Wanderers U7’s v Highworth Town
Following the signing of a sponsorship agreement with Kimera Facilities Management and a subsequent grant from Sportsmatch to create some training opportunities Wickham Wanderers have been able to establish a brand new U7’s team, who after only a few weeks together were able to play their first match away to Highworth Town on Sunday.
The established Highworth side got off to a more confident start and quickly opened the scoring. This spurred Wickham on to produce a swift reply when Harvey Tooth fired the equaliser in to the bottom right hand corner of the goal. From then on Wickham took control of the game and just before half time they took the lead when Tom Butler scored.
Half Time: Highworth 1 – 2 Wickham Wanderers
Wickham came out strongly from the break and shortly after the restart Charlie Saunders broke through the Highworth defence and shot in to the top left hand corner of the net. Then to finish the game in style, Tom Butler came through again to score his second goal of the match. Terrific defending from Chloe Morgan, Erik Barker and Ellis Dawkins helped greatly to secure the win.
Full Time: Highworth 1 – 4 Wickham Wanderers
Since this is a brand new squad new players are needed. If you are interested in joining please contact Ian Herrington on 01488 648132.

Under 7’s have their first match
27-Jan-2007 by admin.
For the last several weeks a group of Under 7’s have been training on Friday nights. Ian has managed to arrange a couple of friendlies to get the team going. The first match will be tomorrow (Sun 28th Jan) away to Highworth Town. The team have their own page on the Wickham Wanderers Website, so you can follow their progress there.
If you know any potential new players for the Under 7’s please let us know. This is probably the most important age group in the club as new players at this age ensure the future for the club.
Social Evening Postponed
27-Jan-2007 by admin.
Apologies for the late postponement of the social evening at Kintbury Rangers last night. We are intending to re-arrange for some in February.
What do you think of these social evenings? Should we arrange more, would you like to arrange other events to bring the club together from time to time?
Please let us know - leave a comment with your suggestions.
U11s vs Stratton Juniors 21 Jan 2007
23-Jan-2007 by Mark.
Stratton Juniors came to the triangle with Wickham looking for revenge for the defeat on remembrance Sunday, with Wickham probably fielding their strongest side of the season.
Wickham kicked off and immediately went on the attack but the cross evaded everyone and went out for a goal kick. Both teams were battling for the ball in midfield but in the 3rd minute it was Stratton who had the first breakaway. Jack Bolton however seemed to have the situation under control but was clipped on his ankle and went down in pain. When Wickham finally cleared the ball it was clear that Jack would have to leave the field. Aiden came on at right back with Jordan switching to centre back, which fortunately did not disrupt the defence too much. The game continued to be quite even with the next chance falling to Wickham. Charlie raced through on the left hand side before squaring the ball to Albie but the keeper came out to make a brave save at Albie’s feet. Wickham started to gain the territorial advantage and with 16 minutes gone a half chance fell to William but the defender just got across in time to cover the danger and concede a corner. A Stratton breakaway in the 20th minute ended with a free kick being conceded on the edge of the Wickham box but fortunately this was struck just wide. In the 25th minute Stratton had a free kick just in their half. This was hit over the Wickham defence for 4 players to run clear. Fortunately, a poor touch on the edge of the box enabled James to make the save. His clearance found Karl sent who sent Charlie away, just left of centre, and as the keeper came out he lifted the ball over the top of him. This may however been going in but Albie was on hand to force the ball over the line. The final 5 minutes were totally dominated by Wickham as three clear cut chances were created but missed but Wickham went into the break one goal up, hoping that these misses would not be costly.
With Stratton playing down the slope they were looking for a quick response. Wickham had taken Olly off for Callum and he would have increased Wickham’s lead but for a great catch by the keeper from Albie’s cross. Stratton then broke away as the forward outpaced Bert but the shot was lifted over the top of the bar. A minute later a quick throw in by Albie sent Duncan away and his cross was met on the volley by Charlie but this also just cleared the bar. With 7 minutes gone William took a throw in to Callum who knocked it back to him. William hit the ball long towards Albie and Charlie but the ball was partially cleared to Duncan. He ran past the defenders and somehow tucked the ball inside the near post for 2-0. The game at this stage was still evenly contested and with 12 minutes gone a mad scramble in the Stratton box first saw Callum, Albie and then Charlie all attempt to get shots away before finally, Callum hit a dipping shot just over the bar. Fraser then came on for Charlie but could not get his usual quick goal. Stratton were now pressing hard, forcing Wickham back into their own half. Few clear cut chances were created but Wickham were now under pressure & struggling to get the ball out of their 3rd. They were now limited to the occasional breakaway. When they did get clear they looked dangerous but they could not convert any of these chances. Wickham were now guilty of defending a little too deep, so that when the ball was cleared there were no midfield players available to gather the ball in and take control. With 5 minutes left Aiden was forced off with an ankle injury, so William switched to right back but Stratton still pressed for a goal which they hoped could be turned into two. The Wickham defence however stayed strong, protecting James well and thus the game finished with a deserved 2-0 victory.
The Player of the Day Award went to Jesse for a great performance at the back.
